  • Cookie of the Week

    Lemon Lavender White Chocolate Cookies

    So good!

Every week brings a new reason to bake… At least that is my story and I am sticking to it. There are always people, places, and things in need of some freshly baked deliciousness. Portable hospitality is my jam… I love seeing the happy look on people’s faces when you show up with a goodie for them (unless, of course, they are watching what they eat..).

With the temperatures sky, high outside in this Louisiana humidity, I thought a cool, refreshing treat would include something with a tangy, fresh lemon zest. This week’s recipe is reminiscent of the south of France with its lemon – lavender combination. With just a hint of lavender, the intensity can be adjusted to your taste, adding more or admitting it all together. It adds a really unique flavor, so I highly recommend it.

  • It’s Peach Season! How About a Peach Cake to Celebrate?

This Buttermilk Cake with Peach Buttercream will knock your socks off.

I recently visited the Saturday Farmers Market in Downtown Bentonville, Arkansas and I can quickly tell you that if I lived there, that would be a routine visit for me. The amazing array of locally grown fruits and vegetables, as well as the fresh breads and pasture raised meats, was spectacular. The town square was crowded with locals and their pets (and gaping-mouthed visitors like me!)

I gathered up as much as I could carry and included in my haul was a basket of fresh peaches. I have been craving a peach cake here lately and gave this recipe a try. When your peaches become ripe and juicy, it is the best time to indulge. See what you think!

The weekend is just around the corner. Get out and find a local grower in your area! Happy Peaching!

  • Chocolate Cattail Cake

This decadent, triple layer, chocolate cake is filled with a rich chocolate ganache and topped with a creamy chocolate praline buttercream. Inspired by the beauty of Louisiana‘s cattail season, it is adorned with hand painted marzipan cattails and edible cake “moss.” It turns this cake into whimsical treat, fit for the most discriminating outdoorsman. Living in a state that dubs itself, “Sportsman‘s Paradise,“ our landscape is rich with natural beauty and those who appreciate its abundance of flora and fauna are sure to delight in the edible cattails.

Celebrate the Outdoor Loving Guys in your life by baking up a treat that is as special as they are.

  • The Squirrel Nest

Good things come in Small Packages

When I downsized my home in 2021 from over 4000 sq. ft. to one a quarter of that size, there was some serious purging and careful selection to be done. Necessities came in first, of course, followed by the objects that bring on the personality. An avid collector by nature, the bits and bobs gathered over my lifetime quickly filled the space, earning my new place the moniker, “The Squirrel Nest.”

Uprooting my life after a couple of decades in the same house was not an easy undertaking. With it came anxiety, stress and grief over a life I once lived. I had raised my children in this home and our history as a family was under its roof, until it wasn’t. My marriage had dissolved, things were packed, moved and now reassembled in this tiny new dwelling place.

Overwhelming is an understatement, but I had a strong determination right out of the gate to create a safe, peaceful, happy environment that seemed like it had always been there. I wanted a home that felt like a warm hug for hurting hearts. I believe that I have created that, no matter how tiny it is. It does feel tranquil and loving, welcoming to all who enter here. It is our home.

I decided the moment that I moved in that I would not let the diminutive size limit my possibilities. I have always enjoyed the art of hospitality, caring for and sharing food with those I love and want to spend time with. It takes some serious imagination to host a dozen people in a Squirrel Nest on Christmas Eve, but I did just that, weeks after moving in. I made it possible by stepping out of my comfort zone and into new possibilities. The disassembling of a marriage and family unit is like a wrecking ball through your heart and home. Everything you knew is wiped away in a moment, forever changing the trajectory of your life story. I was determined that it would not be the end of my story, but rather a very sad chapter on a journey to a happy ending.

The Apostle Paul wrote in 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18, “Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” Is that an easy thing to do? Absolutely not, but I have found it to be necessary in order to move forward in a new life as you know it. It is the secret sauce to a life well-lived, trusting that God has a plan and it does not include giving up. When we are forced to rearrange things in our life, both literally and figuratively, doing so with a heart of gratitude and openness allows us to see new possibilities for ourselves, our families, our homes. Limited spaces do not equal limited opportunities to love, welcome and serve people. Hospitality lives in your heart and travels with you wherever you go.

So, welcome to my little Squirrel Nest. Let’s enjoy a lifestyle of hospitality and friendship, loving and serving others in whatever way we can, in whatever spaces we occupy, with whatever gifts God has given us. Let’s get going, y’all.

  • A Happy Tablescape for Thanksgiving

When I came across this cute little sign at the Becky Vizard headquarters in Saint Joseph, Louisiana, I knew that was going to be my mantra, no matter what life or other people brought my way. I wanted my Thanksgiving table to reflect that this year. … HAPPY!

    It’s a Daily Choice…. CHOOSE HAPPY!

When I saw the tablecloth, I knew that would be the jumping off place. I love the vivid Indian block print in colors of marigold, bubblegum pink, sage green and aubergine.

  • Autumnal Table: Oysters and Antlers

    Spode Woodlands: Oysters & Antlers

The holiday season always begins for me with pulling out my cherished Spode Woodlands dinnerware. Its rich chocolatey browns and earthy hues fill me with inspiration to bring the outdoors in. This year I had tried my hand at the popular DIY oyster shell decoupage crafts, therefore having so many extra shells, I decided to use them for my Thanksgiving table. Living in area that is brimming with natural beauty makes is easy to incorporate the natural world into my home décor. Oysters and antlers were the centerpiece, flowing from a McCarty Pottery platter and planter. Cotton from a nearby farm, rosemary from my kitchen garden and white roses from the market finished off my tablescape theme.

Adding to my table with some antique store finds this year made it all come together with just the colors I wanted. Knives with amber handles added the pop of color needed to give a little kick to my heirloom Richelieu silverware.

For the place cards, each guest had a monogrammed oyster shell, created with a gold paint marker, atop their plate. I had difficulty finding oyster themed linens so I painted my own using white cotton napkins I found on Amazon with acrylic fabric paints designed to be both soft and flexible. They are washable and reusable, making them both beautiful and practical.

The menu flowed over with the oyster theme, as well, but having guests with a shellfish allergy created a bit of adjustment. I concocted both sweet and savory versions of an Oyster Rockefeller, or rather, Mockefeller, with a thoroughly cleaned oyster shell as the base. I went a step further for the allergic guests by wrapping them in cellophane or foil before topping with edible items.

The White and Dark Chocolate Turtles were so delicious with their toasted, salted pecans, rich, homemade caramel and melted white and dark chocolate topping. For extra detail, gold sanding sugar was added for a gilded, finishing touch. For serving, I covered a McCarty Pottery platter with rock salt for an authentic oyster presentation.

    Sweet Oyster Mockefeller

For my Savory Version of Oyster Mockefeller, I used crawfish tails as the base rather than oysters. Strangely, my allergic son is not affected by the freshwater crawfish like he is the saltwater shellfish. I suppose that is the silver lining to living in Louisiana with a shellfish allergy.

    Savory Oyster Mockefeller

For dessert, I baked a towering, three layer chocolate cake adorned with hand painted, watercolor oyster sugar cookies to match my napkins. This decadent cake was filled with Oreo cookies and cream filling and covered in the most amazing chocolate buttercream. I liked the more rustic feel of a “messy” coating of frosting rather than perfectly smooth. Divine.

As suitable as this was for a Thanksgiving theme, it could also be used for an earthy, natural Christmas table.

Hope you enjoyed your Thanksgiving holiday as much as I did.

    Love,

    Allison

  • Valentines in Bloom

Don’t you just adore the vibe of Valentines’ Day? Yesterday, the sun was shining, so the streets were filled with lively traffic, as were all of the retail stores in town. People were smiling more, seemingly happier, and had a generally better attitude. Perhaps is was the sunshine, since we have not seen that much in several weeks, or perhaps it was just because they were allowed to have a lighter spirit on the day celebrating love for others.

My favorite things are flowers and sweets, so any day that’s filled with both is delightful, as far as I’m concerned. I adore having an excuse to create with both flowers and flours. Here are some things I shared with others to express my love for them on the day designated for it.

A Kate Spade inspired arrangement for my college aged daughter

I found this adorable black and white striped vase at Wal Mart and filled it with roses, snapdragons and a variety of filler. I thought it was a sweet and whimsical way to celebrate her.

My mom, whose birthday is the day after Valentine’s Day, gets a double – duty arrangement. A lover of roses and English country garden style, she gets a lush arrangement filled with hydrangeas, snapdragons, ranunculus and beautiful peach colored roses.

    For the birthday girl

Always on the lookout for unusual containers, most especially anything blue and white, I discovered this vase in a small antique shop in Vicksburg, Mississippi.

    For my son’s Valentine

My son’s girlfriend‘s favorite flowers happen to be hydrangeas, so back to the store we went to get some fresh, vibrant blue blooms for his Valentine. He really loved the vase I did for his sister, so we created a little different look using soft pink spray roses, hydrangeas, and snapdragons.

It was a sweet experience, teaching him how to cut and arrange the flowers. I simply guided him and he did the rest. We were both very proud of his work and it made the gift even more special to her.

    The extras for mom

I had enough left over to create this arrangement and then was surprised with a beautiful bouquet from my precious daughter that I added to the mix to create a bedside table arrangement. She is always so thoughtful.

But the sweetest surprise was turning around in the grocery store line to see my son in the next lane purchasing something for his mom. The look on his face when I turned around and caught him in the act was priceless….

An orchid from my sweet son
Pink azalea from my first valentine.. my mom

I even received an adorable pink potted azalea from my sweet mother as the cherry on top for a wonderful day of fond memories.

I hope your day was filled with joy, happiness, laughter, and love. It comes from a variety of people in a multitude of expressions.

  • Thanksgiving Is In the Rearview Mirror

With Thanksgiving behind us and the focus on moving forward To Christmas, I realized that I was in such a hurried pace to get the Christmas decorations up, I’ve been remiss in getting my Thanksgiving tablescape pictures posted. We were away from home for the feasting, but I couldn’t let the holiday pass without pulling out all my favorite things.

    Sportsman’s Paradise

Living in Louisiana provides me with a huge variety of wildlife and natural greenery opportunities for bringing the outdoors in. With family and friends that are avid duck hunters, I’m never lacking in mounted creatures to display. For the greenery, I brought in the last remnants of my okra pods from the garden and clippings from an enormous magnolia on a friend’s property.

    Living the Wildlife

Nothing says fall like a Pumpkin Poundcake. Especially one that is a recipe passed along from your best friend’s mom, who is no longer here on earth.

    Pumpkin Poundcake

I adore painted and decorated sugar cookies for every occasion. I love teaching myself new ways to create them. This year, I ordered an adorable cookie cutter and stencil from Lulukuku creations. Aren’t they cute?!

    On to Christmas!!

  • Mammy’s Cupboard

    Mammy’s Cupboard In Natchez

For as long as I can remember, I have wanted to stop and check out this unique, quirky, Southern landmark just south of Natchez, Mississippi

Built in 1940 by Henry Gaude’, she is one of the few commercial buildings of this architectural style still standing. According to the current owners, the Martin family, she has housed a gas station, craft center, and restaurant.

Open Tuesday to Saturday for lunch from 11 to 2, they offer home-cooked lunch specials, sandwiches on freshly baked sourdough bread, soups and the ever-coveted homemade desserts.

    Yes, Lawd, Yes!

I was greeted and seated by Mr. Terry, one of the owners, who is about as friendly a person as you could imagine. When I sat down and spotted the fresh baked pies on the sideboard, he was so thrilled at my reaction that he took me back in the kitchen to show me the large array of fresh- baked goodness. Heaven, I tell you.

You know you’re in for a treat when the meringue is as high as a Southern Pageant Girl’s hair!

    Can’t Decide….

I don’t have much time, so I opt to go for the homemade chicken salad rather than the plate lunch special. I have a long drive ahead and a full workday, so I’m guessing I would need a nap after a big, hot meal

    Mammy’s Chicken Salad Plate

They bake all of their bread in-house, so I’m really disappointed in myself for not going for it. I’ve tried really hard to avoid flour and sugar, so it took a lot of willpower to turn down that beautiful, fluffy bread. The chicken salad has a hint of curry, with sliced almonds and a side of pineapple. It was cold, fresh and delicious.

I had my eye on the pie, and knew I couldn’t resist, so decided I had to use some restraint somewhere. Mr. Terry was kind enough to waltz past my table and let me admire each and every dish before he served it to my neighboring tables. Y’all, that bread though… I’m really not sure I’ll have any restraint on my next visit.

So now for the best part. PIE! There were so many to choose from, but I was feeling the banana caramel with whipped cream topping. Look how beautiful…..

    Lawd. Have. Mercy.

Well, needless to say, several slices of the meringue pie went back home with me, and had I had an ice chest with me, probably some of the whipped cream would have made the journey also.

So if you find yourself along Highway 61 south of Natchez, pop in and give it a try. I highly recommend it. Get the bread..and the Pie.
